Easy Step-by-Step Instructions for making Masoor Dal at Home.

Rinse the Masoor Dal: Start by thoroughly rinsing the masoor dal under cold water to remove any dust and impurities. This step ensures a clean base for your dal. Time: 3 minutes

Cook the Dal: In a pressure cooker, add the rinsed dal along with water, turmeric powder, and a pinch of salt. Close the lid and cook it for about 3–4 whistles or until the dal is soft and well-cooked. Time: 10–12 minutes

Prepare the Tempering (Tadka): In a pan, heat oil or ghee on medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter. Then, add a pinch of asafoetida and stir for a few seconds. Time: 3 minutes

Saute the Aromatics: Now, add chopped onions and sauté them until golden brown. Add ginger-garlic paste and slit green chili, cooking until fragrant. Add chopped tomatoes and cook until soft and pulpy. Time: 5–6 minutes

Add the Spices: Sprinkle in the red chili powder, coriander powder, and garam masala. Stir everything together to form a fragrant mixture. Let the spices cook for another minute. Time: 2 minutes

Combine the Tempering with Dal: Once the dal is cooked, add the prepared tempering mixture to the dal. Stir it well and let it simmer for a few minutes to let all the flavors meld together. Time: 5 minutes

Final Touch: Garnish with freshly chopped coriander leaves and give it a final stir. Adjust salt and consistency by adding water if necessary. Time: 2 minutes

Serve the Masoor Dal: Your aromatic and flavorful Masoor Dal is now ready to serve. Enjoy it with steamed rice or warm roti! Time: 1 minute
