How to Check Oregano Before Buying
How to Check Oregano Before Buying from Local Vendor:
When buying oregano from a local vendor, it’s important to ensure its freshness and quality. Start by checking the aroma—fresh oregano should have a strong, aromatic scent. If it smells faint or musty, it may be stale. Next, look at the color of the leaves. High-quality oregano should have bright, green leaves, while dried oregano should be a dull green or slightly brown but not too dark. Avoid oregano with yellow, wilted, or discolored leaves, as this indicates poor quality or age. You can also rub the leaves between your fingers to check for a rich, pungent flavor. If it tastes bland, the oregano may not be fresh. If buying packaged oregano, make sure it is stored in an airtight container to protect it from moisture. Always check the expiration or best-before date if available.
When to Buy Oregano in Bulk:
The best time to buy oregano in bulk is during the peak growing season, which is typically from late spring to early summer (May to July). During these months, oregano is fresh, flavorful, and abundant. Purchasing in bulk during this time ensures better prices and allows you to store dried oregano for later use. Oregano, when dried and stored properly, can last up to a year, making it a good idea to buy in bulk when it's at its peak.
