To store mushrooms, first gently clean them with a damp cloth or soft brush to remove any dirt. Avoid rinsing them under water, as mushrooms absorb moisture. Next, place the cleaned mushrooms in a paper bag, which allows for proper airflow while absorbing excess moisture. Seal the bag loosely to prevent humidity build-up. Store the bag in the refrigerator's main compartment, ideally at a temperature between 1-4°C. Check the mushrooms regularly for any signs of spoilage, and consume them within a week for the best flavor and texture. Keeping them in the original packaging helps maintain freshness as well.

How to Check Mushroom Before Buying
When buying mushrooms from a local vendor, first inspect their appearance. Fresh mushrooms should have a firm texture, smooth skin, and a uniform color, whether white, brown, or any other variety. Avoid mushrooms that appear slimy, discolored, or have dark spots, as these indicate spoilage. Check for a pleasant, earthy smell; a sour or pungent odor is a sign of deterioration. It's best to buy mushrooms in small quantities unless you know you can use them quickly. Mushrooms have a relatively short shelf life, typically lasting only a few days in the refrigerator. If you do decide to procure in bulk, ensure proper storage to maintain freshness, such as keeping them in a paper bag to allow air circulation. Consider freezing any excess to extend their usability, but remember that the texture may change upon thawing.
